Welcome to Joe McWilliams Gardening Services.
For the last three years, since its beginning, my gardening business has been flat out. I have some regular maintenance clients who we give a year for whom I provide a programme of lawn care and other services. Pruning is done at the right time of year to ensure plant health and maximise flowering potential. I have undergone several full design projects with clients – producing drawings and planting schemes, and giving full plant details with maintenance instructions. In addition to designing and maintaining gardens, I have completed regular landscape work, including: block paving, various types of fencing, patios and front gardens, car parking areas and bike and bin shelters.
I hold a level-2 RHS diploma in Horticulture, and have completed my first year of the level-3 RHS qualification, and I am taking further exams this summer. I have worked on gardens in Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, St Neots, the Cotswolds, the New Forest, Somerset and the Dordogne region of France.
I have also obtained a BA Honours degree in Drama and Theatre, where I specialised in theatre design and then taught drama for a number of years. I designed many productions, always including live plants and water. It was a natural career progression into garden design and landscaping.
I have always had a keen interest in wildlife and enjoy working with clients to design wildlife-friendly gardens – considering hedgehog corridors and hibernating spots, bird feeding and bathing, pollinators, and beneficial insects, to name a few. Pond design and planting are at the heart of any wildlife garden, and I have developed an extensive list of those plants that aerate ponds and provide habitats for dragon flies, frogs and other animals. I try to garden organically myself, but realise that some clients have practical problems that may need inorganic solutions.
Being a father, child-friendly gardens have been a particular focus for me: creating a space that is beautiful yet practical for balls flying around! Dividing up the space, thus giving children areas to play, plant and rest is important to me.
I am able to create gardens with year-round interest due to my extensive knowledge of garden plants that flourish in our climate.
